Traceability

Welcome to the windswept countryside, spectacular glacial lakes, dramatic mountain ranges and clean, clear waters of Patagonia. It’s here that we raise our salmon with an ever-conscious eye towards their health and a commitment to protect the precious ecosystems surrounding our farms.

The strongest lineage of broodstock (breeding fish) are chosen to grow each cycle. The eggs are incubated in our state of the art hatchery. There, they are nourished by their own yolk sacs until they hatch. We are able to trace each one back seven generations, giving our salmon the best chance to thrive.

Here our salmon receive the benefits of being in the Humboldt Current. The water is constantly circulated by the Tradewinds on the surface, the rich nutrients up-welling from the deep ocean trenches, and the cold, low-saline waters of Antarctica.

In order to ensure each salmon has the best musculature we ensure they have plenty of room to swim. Even though these are school fish, in order for them to properly develop their fins they need to be able to move individually and within the school. That is why we ensure we don’t have more than 2 fish per cubic meter.

Once they are fry they are moved to our fresh water tanks and begin the feeding process. As they grow they are moved to bigger and bigger tanks so they have room to move until they become smolts. Smolts, salmon at about 12-18 months old, are then ready to be moved to one of our remote open ocean net pens to finish their growth cycle.

Once they are at sea stage they are carefully transported to one of our remote farms throughout the 11th and 12th regions. Under 24 hour care of our skilled farmers and fed a proprietary feed our fish thrive here for approximately 15 to 18 months until harvest.

Our goal is to eliminate as much of our carbon footprint as possible, as such we fly our fish in on commercial planes as much as possible without disrupting the supply chain. About 3 days after harvest your fish arrives at your distributor who then ships it to your restaurant or local retailer.

Our fish thrive in waters uniquely primed with micro-nutrients and planktons. Here the alpine mountains, active volcanoes, and glacial-melt waters rain down into the sea to create incredibly rich environment for life.

In 2019, Verlasso began a partnership with Veramaris. High-quality omega-3 produced from micro algae that’s 100% natural and easy to handle. Veramaris’s fermented algal oils are a significant component in our feed, raising our Omega 3’s and decreasing our FIFO.

Once the salmon have grown to their idea weight of at least 8 pounds they are ready to be harvested. Our fish are only harvested for an order to ensure the best quality and freshness. Each one is inspected by hand before being boxed for delivery.
